I have this bad habit when I bake. I seldom read the directions in full before I start making the recipe. I mean, I have good intentions to do so, but my impatience gets the best of me and I just start baking. My mom did not understand this. I would mess up whatever I was making and she would ask, “Well, did you read the whole recipe first?” Ya, ya, ya.
It turns out that women’s book clubs are the same, even in Zurich. There is always an assigned book, and there are always the essential food groups; wine, apps, and dessert. But the best part of it all is that you don’t actually have to read the book. Don’t get me wrong, I like reading, but I don’t want to have to skip a book club if I didn’t get a chance to finish the book. It’s a wonder to me why we even bother to call it book club in the first place, but I won’t fight it. It sounds distinguished and is a great excuse for a girls night in.
We arrived “home” to Zurich last week and as much fun as we had in the states, I have to say that I am glad to be back. I was gone for almost two months, and it was about time to sleep in my own bed and cook in my own kitchen. And boy, am I glad to be done wedding planning.
I’m embarrassed to admit this, but my new routine consists of waking up around 7am, making a cup of tea, and plopping myself in front of the TV to watch my morning shows. To justify this, I have my computer in my lap and catch up on all my emails and mindless computer tasks that I would spend time doing anyways.But watching TV is not the embarrassing part…
Even though I am currently a lady of leisure, I have somehow managed to jam pack my weekly schedule. Fortunately, this schedule consists of mostly things I want to do. Though I’m quickly realizing how easy it is to prioritize these fun activities over some of the basic chores I should be doing on a daily basis. But, there are justifications for every activity:
I’m back in the kitchen and it feels so good. Cooking is easy without measuring cups and spoons, but baking…not so much. I managed to survive by taste testing many different Swiss chocolate bars.
Which is also why I need to start baking again. But with a healthy twist. I have a wedding dress to fit into soon and just like every other girl in my position, I want to tone up for the occasion. I can’t handle the newest Paleo or Whole30 diets, since I simply don’t have the desire or willpower. But, I have strong beliefs in the power of good ‘ole calorie counting. Then I can still have my desserts and French fries, just in moderation.
