I am starting to feel like a grown-up. I am liking this whole “settled” feeling. I have lived in one place for 3 whole years in a row. I have a community of friends, a regular hair dresser/beautician/acupuncturist, a normal yoga routine, and a great new career. Former spontaneous events have turned into weekly, monthly, or annual affairs. Traditions are being created. Same people, same place, same food, different memories all rolled into one.
The Olympics came and went in a hurry this year and there was hardly any time to do anything but glue myself to the couch for two straight weeks. Now the Olympics are done and my TV shows have yet to start up again, so what in the world am I supposed to do when I get home from work? Luckily, Jenna’s birthday came to the rescue, and there was an excuse to have a party and for me to make something tasty. Since the official games are over, she decided that we needed to have our own Olympics; the Beer Olympics.
When I think of summer, I think of Santa Cruz weekends. My family beach house has been a constant vacation destination ever since I can remember. As a kid, I would spend my time playing on the beach, actually swimming in the freezing cold ocean, burying each other in the sand, and digging up as many sand crabs as we could find. These days I spend more time hanging out on the porch than with the sand crabs, but they will always bring back good memories. And that’s exactly why I had to make these ridiculously cute sand crab cupcakes for our most recent beach weekend.
